The most magnificent cultural and architectural accomplishments of Cambodia has to be the awesome monuments of Angkor, now World Cultural Heritage Sites preserved by Unesco.

These world famous locations were built between the ninth and thirteenth centuries and are located to the north west of the capital city of Phnom Penh and just a couple of miles from the ancient historical city of Siem Reap.

Thousands of temples were established in the honor of Hindu Gods, the Lord Buddha, as well as the rulers of the Angkor Dynasty, which reached its peak in cultural achievement at that time. Unfortunately, the temples of Angkor were ruined by warfare, left to the jungle, and many precious relics vandalized and stolen.

During the reign of the Khmer Rouge, from 1975-1979, great numbers of Cambodian citizens were assassinated. Many city dwellers and villagers were forced to flee their residences and move to the isolated villages where they believed that peace and hope would be found. 

However, all hopes of peace and safety were dashed when Pol Pot's regime instituted a national genocide program and used military power to murder people. Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and all other municipalities became deserted as assassinations, death and disease rampaged everywhere. Even some public buildings became known as virtual killing fields.
